My Mercury 850 from 74 is leaking water from a 3mm hole on the left side in the exhaust manifold cover. Can I repair it with JB Weld or should I replace the cover with a new one. From the parts catalog I can see that it is an plate inside the cover as well but when I put a small screw driver into the hole it goes 3 inches in.

The hole is probably from corrision on the inside of the plate. It needs to be removed and inspected and the inner plate needs to looked at, if the inner plate gets a hole in it water will get into the cylinders.

Over time sand gets into the cooling system or scales form this blocks the water from totally draining. The water eventually causes corrosion and eats away at the aluminum and steel plate that is sandwiched between the cover. Quite common in saltwater apps.
