2008 25 efi shifter

could any one tell me if 25 efi is normal, when i shift into gear{reverse, forward} it sounds like gear box's is slipping, it makes clicking, or ratcheting noise for about 2 seconds, the engages firmly, also when shifting into neutral there is a delay before coming out of gear.
new to boating, and i don't know much.

When shifting into gear don't slowly move gearshift into gear, need to go into gear with one quick motion of lever,it is metal to metal contact between clutch dog and gear. There shouldn't be any delay.
