  • 8 HP merc dies unless I pull the choke

I need help. My motor dies when the choke button is pushed in. It runs for less than a minute and unless I pull the choke when I hear it slowing, it dies. I have checked the fuel lines and taken out the carburetor and cleaned it. After I put it back together the same thing happens.

Any ideas what I should try next?

Sounds like a fuel pressure issue possibly. Have you verified that fuel is getting pumped to the carb? Check to make sure your ball is pumped up and that it stays firm. The ball very well could be bad. Or there's a air leak somewhere from the cap, along the fuel lines or at the motor. Very possibly your vent is is clogged up try cranking the motor using a alternate fuel tank that will at very least let you know the problem is from the point of hook up, back to the gas tank if your motor cranks and runs normally. If the issue stays the same with an alternate fuel tank, then you know your problem is some part on the engine along the fuel delivery system.
