Lower unit 1996 50hp 4 stroke

I need to replace the water impeller on a 1996 50 4 stoke. The lower will drop about an inch but no further. I can't find out how to disconnect the shift rod. It seems to be a one part rod. Thanks for any help that you can give.

The shift shaft is a spline and should slide apart, if you can drop it an inch I would imagine it's disengaged, you should be able to see it at that point. If it is it's corrosion on the studs

shift rod

The shift rod is at the front of the powerhead, you lift the tab up and slide it sideways about 1 inch.
