Mercury 50 hp

I have a 2002 50 hp. 2 stroke engine, three cly. that the tack. quite working. I'm looking for some help on testing, to see if the tack is bad or a wire loose. Do not know where the wires hook up at engine. I have a side console boat with a ton of wires under the steering wheel. Any help would be great.

Start by checking ac voltage at gray wire at tach to see if voltage increases as rpm's increase, if does then probably bad tach. If not probably bad voltage regulator.
