shock absorbers

What is the ultimate function(s) of the shock absorbers on my 1982 4 cylinder? I purchased it last fall, runs great but, realized that the shocks offer no resistance what so ever. Appears that they are no longer available but have found an automotive replacement with the exact dimensions. Trying to conclude if the automotive version will do the job..............thanks, Paul

I think you are talking the tilt assit cylinder on a manual tilt model.
