I started my 2002 seventy five horse power mercury for the first time this year and the rectifier/regular was smoking hot after about five minutes. Anyone have any ideas what causes this? thanks for replies.

Don't know whats failing but...
Last fall on my last trip out my 2004 115hp 2-stroke quit on me. Once we got back to shore found the wire harness from the regulator to the stator melted. Rather than taking it in I'm just replacing all the melted parts, plus some. The harness conectors on the reg. end were melted more than the stator end so I'm assuming the reg. failed. $600 later, we'll find out... If I was you I'd replace it before it got worse.
