Mercury backlash adjustment

Can someone explain to me the proper way to shim the gears in a 9.8 lower gear case. Im swapping outer casings and i just dont understand the manuals explanation Thank you

Would need proper shimming tools. Tools are listed in service manual.

I do have the manual and there is no proper tools listed. The manual says you do it by feel. Witch does not help. How do you feel .003-.005 of an inch
