3.5 hp get shift rod to engage/connect in LU

Removed lower end to change impeller. pulled up on shift rod to see it engage the prop, which it did. The played with it again and it came out. Put in back but won't engage. How to get it to engage the gear shift again?

I do not have the info handy. I can tell you that it is a 2008

It should slide back into place, be sure that the flat end is forward.
