I am helping a friend by trying to bring a '72 7.5 hp Mercury outboard back to life after sitting for 20+ years. When I began, the wiring was all corroded, so I spent the last few days replacing pretty much every wire under the hood. The only issue I faced was with the no longer available white plastic block things that hold the metal post that one end of the points attaches to. These were cracked and, try as I might, I couldn't get a good solder connection to hold. One of them is pretty good, the other is rough, with the wire attaching to the metal with a combination of suspect solder and wires wrapping around the metal part. I hoped the connection would be good enough. I got it all back together, bought a spark tester and, not surprisingly, NO SPARK on either cylinder. (Whatever the issue is, this is probably what put the motor into retirement 20+ years ago). My question is, where should I start? Is there a logical progression? I don't know anything about the points and condensor and that seems like a logical step. (I already replaced the spark plugs, fyi). Are the points and condensor for this motor even still available at a reasonable price? Any help on the steps I should take from here would be appreciated. I'm worried about those white block dealies that attach to the points and I'd like to know where to get those also. Thanks for taking the time to hear my story!
