  • Timing a 1976 Mercury 110 9.8HP SN 4391XXX M

I have a 1976 Mercury 110 9.8HP SN 4391XXX that I am going through. I have a Seloc book that tells how to time it, but the procedure is not very clear. On the Starter Housing it says the timing should be set to .195 341/2 degrees. The procedure in the Seloc tells you to attach a Timing Light and a Tachometer and advance the throttle until the Maximum Timing Mark is aligned with the mark on the starter housing. The set the Maximum Spark Advance screw until it just makes contact. It tells you to check the specs for the recommended RPM.

    Questions:
    1. Which timing mark should be used? (Solid or Broken line mark?)
    2. Is WOT 4500-5500 RPM the running speed that this adjustment should be made?
    3. When you do this procedure is the timing set to .195 34 1/5 degrees BTDC? (How do you check this?)
    4. Is the other screw for setting the Idle Speed Stop?
    4. Anybody have a written procedure for timing this motor?
