Lower Shift Rod

In replacing the lower shift rod seal on a 100hp Mariner, I pulled the rod out and now I'm unable to locate the shift lever in the lower gear housing. Is there a way to get the shift lever back in alinement so the shift shaft can be engaged, without disassembling the the lower gear housing unit?
