Default 1989 90 hp Mariner question

Hey gang,

I'm new to the forum, but I know that there is just a wealth of knowledge as I belong to motorcycle forum also and the folks on there are great at helping each other as I'm sure is the same here.

I have a question about my 90hp Mariner. it recently was having trouble running at high rpm's and would surge really erratically as though it was starving for fuel at high speeds . I also had trouble pumping the fuel bulb as it would never tighten, but it would send enough fuel to the engine to run.

Two days ago, I rebuilt my fuel pump, replaced the internal fuel lines on the engine, replaced the fuel filter and replaced the fuel bulb with a Mercury brand bulb. The bulb now tightens and the fuel filter is full of gas.

It seems to start fine and idles, not great, but pretty well. The problem is that when I put it in gear and turn up the revs, sometimes it surges and sometimes it doesn't, but it will not turn as high of revs as it should (wide open seems like it's only at about 2/3 throttle). Every now and again you can hear it trying to turn up, but it just won't. The gas that I have in the tank is about 1/2 last summer and 1/2 3 weeks old with a can of Seafoam in it (12 gallon tank). Could this gas be the root of my problem? Nasty carbs? Any suggestions that yall might have as to where I need to go next would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kris

Yes gummed up carburetors sounds like a possible issue, I recommend throughly cleaning the carburetors and replacing the fuel.
