Default Seal above water pump?

Hello, All!

I have a 1998 90HP Force outboard that I was given. I've replaced the water pump, and I had no issues putting it all back together. Upon firing up the engine, I noticed that there was water coming out of the hole where the shift shaft penetrates the foot and is exposed. To be honest, I don't know if it was doing that with the old pump assembly in there, so I may be worrying about nothing. Anyway, I was concerned that maybe the original water hose that connects to the snout of the water pump was off or something, but when I tore the foot off the engine again, it was not the case. I did not receive the shaft seal that slides on the drive shaft after the water pump is reassembled, so my question is whether I need it or not. I saw some videos on YouTube where people rebuilt water pumps, and they all show this seal being slid on the shaft as the last thing before reassembling the foot to the engine.

Here's the weird part - there is no seal shown in the parts diagram, but the videos clearly show it being installed. The old water pump did not have that seal on top of the assembly. So, the question becomes whether or not I need it or not. I assume that the seal prevents water from coming out of the top of the pump, which would allow water to travel up to the engine via the driveshaft tunnel?

So, do I assemble the engine like I found it, or wait until I get this seal? I have no idea what the part number for the seal is, so I can't order it! With the engine idling, there is a small stream peeing out of the engine like it's supposed to, but does the water leaking at the shift shaft indicate that I'm not getting all of the water to the engine that should go there?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can offer assistance!

There are drain holes in gearcase to drain out any water in cavity's in gearcase and nothing to worry about.
