Cool 1993 1/2-94 Gamefisher 15HP (Mercury/Force) Starter WTH

Model# 225.581506 Serial- 0E0 45037
Got this motor from my little brothers first boat purchase. Quite a bit of research determined the year, maker, an owners manual. Sounds like it good be a good little boat pusher. So far so good....

I've repaired the wiring, adjusted shift linkage, made sure lower had fresh oil. Checked for the thermostat and appears to function. All parts are there and the unit even looks like it's ready to go drive the boat around.
I wanted to give it a pull or two so I could start troubleshooting carb, electrical, impeller and all..... The pull starter just whips in and out and doesn't engage the flywheel shaft. I think, ok, take it apart and see what the problem is. The pulley assembly has 3 sets of roller bearings, the pulley and a bare machined shaft coming out of the flywheel through it. I am flumoxed trying to figure out where , what or how that pulley and its bearings engage that shaft in any way to rotate the flywheel!! This part makes me beat my head on the shop wall.... I have taken the assembly off several times to try to see what I'm missing. When I put it back on... it functions and engages the flywheel for 1 or 1 1/2 pulls, then I hear a quiet "tik" and it free-pulls again. The upper and lower bearings are short and completely encircle the shaft. The set in the middle has longer bearings and is separated into sets of 4.

I have found several sources that still offer this part assembly. I just dont want to have to pay for it if it's not necessary. I'm sure i'll have plenty of parts orders for this as it is Shop manuals are hard to find for it too!

Any help would be very much appreciated,
Thanks

I am uncertain what bearings you are referring, there are two different styles. Neither spin the flywheel with bearings.

Hi, I am haveing the same problem with my 1994 Gamefisher 15 hp, The flywheel nut has a shaft that sticks up about 2" and the recoil starter just as described with the beaings inside just slides over it,

Can just the bearings be replaced or do I have to buy the hole thing ?

Also where can you get these still, I cant seem to find one.

Thanks

Ok I see, yes you have to purchase the entire pulley assembly. Unfortunately this is no longer available. Be sure there is no oil on the bearings or the shaft.

Wouldnt there be other recoil spools made by mercury that would fit this ?

I still dont understand myself how it actually works with those bearings and the shaft.

Those bearings are one way bearings, which means they will spin freelly one way and grab the other. There are no other starters available to work on this specific model, you can check aftermarket.
