Default 50hp, two stroke voltage regulator failure

The voltage regulator on my outboard burned up and I am wondering what could have caused this to occur.... One wire is completely burned into and the other five coming out of the regulator have burned and melted insulation. Additionally, two connecting wires to the regulator connectors have burned and melted insulation.

I have found the part number for the regulator but cannot identify the attaching connecting cable part number. I need both part numbers to repair the damages. I am being told by an authorized dealer that the regulator is a common failing item and wonder if there is a Mercurty bulletin out on this problem. The Model number of my outboard is 1050412FD and the serial number is 1B583750.

Any help to my questions would certainly be appreciated.

I had this happen twice to my 1999 60hp mercury and both times it was self inflicted. 1st time i disconnected the battery cables briefly while the engine was running at idle. The regulators do not like this at all and i melted the 2 yellow wires going to the stator and the red wire to the battery. No problem though because the regulator nor the stator was not damaged. I rewired the stator and regulator and all was well again charging nicely. But wait, i decided i wanted to run two 12 volt batteries to get more amps for my trolling motor and guess what, the regulator does not like charging more than 1 battery at a time. So i melted the same wires again but not as bad. I replaced only i melted wire (the red one) and all is well again. Since i stopped doing things to my outboard without asking first i've had noooooooo problems at all......Hope this helps......Tom
