My 1985 260 HP mercruiser with factory electronic ignition stalls at low RPM's, 1500 or so and below. The engine runs smoothly and this does not happen all the time. The problem is not related to shifting but does act as if the shift interrupt momentarily stalls the engine. It will restart without much effort and without giving extra throttle. This little quirk has been happening the life of the boat. Fuel filters have been replaced thinking it was water droplets causing the problem. All tune up parts have been replaced: cap rotor and plugs. I am planning on replacing ignition wires this spring but do not expect that it has anything to do with the problem.
It is not a fun problem especially when docking. If anyone has encountered this problem or has any ideas as to its repair, a reply would be appreciated.

you say the prob is not related to shifting..... when was the last time the intermediate shift cable was replaced or better yet when was the outdrive removed last?? when the motor stalls, are you shifting it(in or out of gear) right before it does this??
