Default voltage regulator

i have a 2000 mercury 90 hp 4stroke. bought it two days ago, run great. took it out on the lake yesterday and the voltage regulator got hot and melted. note i did have the battery on a charger yesterday morning. did the battery charger create this problem? or coincidence? or faulty cdi box? are these known to go bad? where is the best place to order parts?

Check battery cable connections at battery and engine are clean and tight, check all wire and ground connections are good.

Look under the flywheel and make sure there is no melting or discoloration of the stator as well.
If your battery has an issue (IE: shorted cell) it could have caused the failure as well.
Motor temperature can easily cause this as well, the regulator is cooled by contact with it's mounting points.
