HI,
I have a mercury 402. It's running ok, only if I shift it in to reverse it does not catch the gear before it is reving up. Would it help to change the Control cable or is that not the problem. I am not sure but it does not look to bad. Thanks for any help.

A bad cable or cable not adjusted properly can cause that. It could also damage gears and shift clutch, check the lower unit for metal shavings.

The lower unit looks good. I tried to adjust the cable but that is the max I can give for reverse, or I will have the same for the forward gear. So I should change the cable I guss.
Thanks for your help.

I have the same motor with the same problem as you did with yours. Maybe you can share some information with me. What did you do to correct the problem. Thanks in advance for any help.
