i just bought an old mercury 6 cylinder outboard that was rebuilt with no info on engine. i started to research the sn# "4401333" and found that it could be a 1974-1976 ,but which one is it. I am also unsure of the hp because the cover says it is a "mercury 800" but when i looked up sn# shown above it seems to be a "mercury 850" . could it be that someone put the wrong cover on by mistake. please any input would help because i can't find a control cable for it with out knowing the year.

The only thing you can do is to use the serial number to look up parts, it may have cowling switched, or engine or even transom bracket you never know.
