I want to change this motor to an 18" column length and need instructions for removing the 42" column now installed . . . Specifically cautions with removing control wiring running to the lower motor unit. I have the plastic case off and the control unit off of the column but have made no disconnects.

Also, this is a freshwater unit and I plan to use it in saltwater occasionally, washing thoroughly with fresh water as I do my gasoline OB motor . . Is the addition of the anode the main or only difference?

Unfortunately there are no manuals available for the repair of Trolling motors. I recommend bringing to your local dealer.
