I have a mercury 115 outboard with no ignition fire, i have been told the stator is bad, can you tell me the best way to confirm this.

The year and model are not the same as my motor. But mine will not fire either. Only when it wants to, like it has a mind of it's own. Does your fire anytime at all. Mine will fire and run 2 seconds to several minutes. Then will not fire again. Let it sit all night and it would not fire. Went back that afternoon and it did. Been told it is stator. From what I get out of my manual the only way to check it properly is take it to a mechanic that has the mercury equipment.
