Can you tell me if it is safe to flush the lower unit gear case with anything before replacing with fresh oil, if so what should be used. Can you give me an idea of how much oil I will need to purchase to fill once I have drained the lower unit. i have a 1997 mercury 150.

The only thing I know of would be a parts cleaning solution. The gearcase holds about 24 oz.
