Default mercontrol removal

I need some help removing a mercontrol.I already removed the set screw that holds the handle but when i tried to pull the handle off it slid out about an inch and something else is holding it.Do I need to remove the button in the middle of the handle first? If so how?I removed a plug on the back directly behind the button and the plug and a spring came out but it didn't help.any help would be appreciated

it,s for a 66 950ss thunderbolt on a 66 glasspar avalon

The best I can remember thats all you had to do to get handle off, if the set screw has came loose at any time it may have burred up the shaft enough to make it difficult to get handle off.
