Merc 200 20 HP Is It Woth Fixing ?????
Hello, This might be a long post but I want to describe everything. I was given a old Jon Boat, motor, and trailer about 10 years ago. My son has been wanting to do some fishing so I decided to pull it out from under the shed where it has been sitting for about 8 years. The boat itself needs some TLC but thats not a problem.
What I am concerned about is the motor. It is a old Merc 200 20 hp outboard (serial #2335283) which I think is a 1968 model. Before I did anything I checked the motor to see if I turned freely, which it did. Before trying to start it I changed all the wiring which had alot of crackes in the insulation, I removed the carb and gave it a though cleaning. There is not much to this carb in the way of parts. replaced the plugs and fuel lines. Checked the water pump impeller and changed lower end fluid. After all of this I was able to get it started but the motor does not run very well. It has a poor low end idle and high end smoothness. I have tried adjusted the mixture screws but it does not change anything. I can keep it running by playing with the throttle but it will die after about 35-40 seconds. It will start tight back up but you have to use the primer bulb every time to get it to start back up, even after eng is warm. Eng spitts and sputters and backfires sometimes when trying to accelerte. It getting good spark so I dont know if its Ign or fuel related. Maybee has a timming problem. Forgot to mention the foward and reverse gears work great. As a last effort I pulled off the fuel pump to check it out today. I did find that part of the gasket was torn on the inside. Seems like there were 2 gaskets put together to make up one (diaphragm?). Could this be the problem?.I have a rebuild kit on order but have not gotten it yet. But then again its just some gaskets.
I quess with all I have stated is this motor even worth the trouble. After all its 41 years old. Could I be opening up a can of worms trying to fix it. Is it worth fixing. Please help. I am so SORRY for the long post
