Default Fire to plugs

Have 84 60hp 3cyl mercury. It will start and run from 2 seconds to several minutes. Then shuts down. Then there is not fire to plugs. Used multimeter to test Stator. The Red on causes me concern. At 200 ohms setting it reads 151, at 2k it reads .151.
Checked it after it had ran for few minutes. Red lead had changed to .161 @ the 2K setting. I have disconnected the yellow/black wire at mercury switch and the switch box. Makes no difference.
Problem started with motor only running at about 1500 to 2000 rpm. It would stop when given gas. Couple of time I played with choke and it ran fine. Up to 4850 rpm. As the day went on it got harder to start and the choke thing did nothing. Cleaned the carbs. Adjusted timing and linkage per manual.
When I put it back in water the problem was the same, but now this no fire problem started. I have checked wiring from switch, even installed new switch. Couple of readings the manual said should happen do not. But when I start the motor it runs smooth until it quits. Could they be related? Any suggestions. Hate to put much money in 84 motor.

Only way to tell which part is bad is to test each component with a peak reading voltmeter per manual when it looses fire.
