Hi Gang,

I have a 9.9 Mercury bought new in 1994 – the motor remained untouched for >18 months at which time we put it on a boat and ran it 30 min or so. When starting it “backfired?”, tried to start backward or something as it snatched the start cord from my hand a few times before starting. I figured it was the newness and being set so long. A few weeks later we took the boat on a fishing trip with some friends and this time it kept snatching the cord and when a young man wanted to try the recoil starter broke. Over the next several years I replaced the Clutch Bearing in the recoil several times went through the Carburetor, Plugs etc. and followed the linkage adjustments in the manual all with the same results. One of my neighbors and I removed the recoil starter and put a make shift rope pull on it and used it on a barge a few weeks, When started it runs great.

I just replaced the entire recoil starter – going to try again – the seconded pull came out of my hand SO before I through it in the River I thought I’d check out there for any suggestions. Mod No. H009201RS Ser. No. OE093061

Thanks in advance!

Is it that is pulls back or stops the forward motion of the starter rope?

In the past I have seen the shift lock out be misaligned and cause problems as you describe.

The only other thing I can think of would be a lean pop as the piston moves up the cyl...timing out or one of the electronics is sending the spark at the wrong time.
