Please help... I bought a boat with a 1996 225hp Merc... Out of the water it runs fine, and in the water it idles fine, the problem is when you start to accelerate it, it only reaches about 2500 RPM. The mechanic that had serviced the boat prior to buying it said he had cleaned the carbs, I checked the fuel lines and fuel filter and all seem to be fine, and the gas that is in the tank is about 3 weeks old so I dont believe the gas would be an issue either. The oil injection on the engine has been removed and we are mixing 50:1. I have been told it may be the stator, but I have no clue as how to check it. I will greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks

The high speed coil in stator may be faulty, have stator and ignition system tested.
