I realize it has been quite some time since this question was posted but I thought I would answer it anyway because I had a similar problem with my 1996 Mercury 150 V6 carbed motor. It would smoke a lot when the motor was started but then let up after it was running for a while.

I replaced two check valves on the oil injection system and this solved my problem. Perhaps this may help you.

The two check valves I replaced are:

1) "Crankcase pressure one-way check valve" that is located on the starboard side of the crankcase. A pressure hose runs from this valve to the remote oil tank. Its purpose is to pressurize the remote oil tank. It also is supposed to avoid over-pressurizing the tank when the engine is running and to also relieve the pressure after the motor is turned off. If this valve is defective and not doing the latter functions, then too much pressure or too much latent pressure in the tanks will force oil past the oil pump towards the fule pump causing too much smoke when the motor is next started.

2) "2 PSI check valve" that is located between the oil pump and the fuel pump. This valve's primary purpose is to keep gas from being pushed into the oil line (towards oil pump) when the fuel line squeeze bulb is pumped before starting the motor. It also restricts the seepage of oil from the higher oil pump to the lower fuel pump and when the motor is off. If this check valve is stuck open, then excess oil may seep towards the fuel pump when the motor is off causing smoke when the motor is next started.

If the motor smokes excessively and continuously (rather than only at start-up), then it would not likely be the check valves or oil injection system but rather dirty or miss-adjusted carbs.
