Default 1972 Mercury 100 9.8 Water pump question.

Hi,

I have a 1972 Mercury 100 9.8 outboard that I just picked up from a friend. The impeller was bad so I replaced it and now when I run it in my test tank it has a very strong stream coming from the tell tail at Idle but if you bring the rpms up using the warm up range of the tiller handle throttle the stream of water coming from the tell tail will start to be erratic and fluctuate and the temperature of the water coming out will get very warm.Dose anyone know what might be wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Tim

The exhaust may be causing interrupted flow of water to water pump intake when running it in a tub, take boat out and run it to see if helps.
