Default 1968 model 39 lower unit leak

I just bought a ‘68 model 39, 3.9hp. the lower unit is taking on water, and after researching I found out that its common for the carbon steel drive shaft to pit around the water pump housing. Mine is pitted. It was suggested to use speedi sleeves to press fit over the area where the seal sits. Anyone have any experience doing this?
